Jennifer Read serves as Chief Communications Officer for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
Read joined DHEC in 2010 as a health systems developer in the Bureau of Community Health and Chronic Disease Prevention. In 2013, she was promoted to Director of Outreach and served on the Public Health Senior Leadership Team, where she managed the agency’s health communications, education, outreach, and strategic policy initiatives.
In 2015, Read was named Chief Communications Officer and joined the agency’s Executive Leadership Team. In this role, she is responsible for the agency’s communications and public affairs strategies including planning, messaging, engagement, marketing, public outreach, media relations, and issues management.
In 2016, she oversaw the first rebranding of the agency in more than 20 years. Read also led the agency’s crisis communication responses to Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and the historic flooding that struck South Carolina in October 2015. She frequently speaks to groups about issues management, crisis communications, health policy, and risk management.
Prior to joining DHEC, Read served as a public relations and government affairs executive in the private and non-profit sectors.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in international studies from University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in public administration from College of Charleston.
