Certificate of Need Review Panel meeting set

COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina's Certificate of Need Review Panel will meet March 27, the state Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

The meeting will start at 10 a.m. on the 18th floor of the McNair Law Firm Building in Columbia.

The agenda includes brief staff presentations on the history of South Carolina's CON statute, pending changes to the CON regulation, and the status of DHEC's CON program area budget. The panel will discuss the differences between South Carolina's CON program and CON programs in other states. The panel has set aside a 30-minute public comment period to begin at 11:30 a.m.

Appointed by the DHEC Board in January 2012, the CON Review Panel includes 23 members who represent a broad range of stakeholder interests. The panel will seek to improve the agency's internal process regarding its CON program through user/provider input. This includes the following goals:

  • Streamline the CON process, making it less onerous.
  • Standardize the weighting of criteria within the CON regulation.
  • Examine the current statute as it relates to the changing needs within the community/population/circumstance.
  • Evaluate instances in which CON should and should not be required.

More information on the panel is available on DHEC's website at:
