DHEC Update – TB Investigation, Greenwood County
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has provided the following update to the tuberculosis (TB) investigation in Greenwood County:
- The “index patient” in this TB investigation has today been detained and transported to a secure medical facility where the individual will be confined for continued medical treatment, pursuant to an Emergency Public Health Order issued today by DHEC Director Catherine Templeton. (See Attached.) The detention will be for thirty (30) days, or until such time as the patient is no longer considered to be infectious.
The Order states the detention is the result of “noncompliance with the Public Health Order issued by DHEC on May 30, 2013.” (See Attached.)
- As of this update, the testing totals stand as follows:
Total number of TB skin tests = 546 (59 staff, 487 students),
Total number of positive TB skin test results = 63 (10 staff, 53 students),
Total number of abnormal chest X-ray readings = 11 (1 staff, 10 students).
