COLUMBIA, S.C. â€“ Eight schools have been recognized as Champions of the Environment for the 2013-2014 school year, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
â€śWeâ€™re pleased to be able to give out eight major grant awards this year,â€ť said Amanda Ley, DHECâ€™s coordinator for the Champions of the Environment program. â€śWe were also able to provide smaller starter awards to four other schools just beginning their projects.
â€śThis yearâ€™s grant award projects are really innovative and spread widely across the state,â€ť she said. â€śTopics range from alternative energy and sustainable gardening to restoring natural areas.â€ť

In addition to the grant awards, a commercial will be made about each of the projects and the commercials will be featured on WIS-TV in Columbia, the Championsâ€™ website and YouTube.
Champions of the Environment supports environmental action in South Carolinaâ€™s kindergarten through 12th-grade students through its grant award program. Champions is sponsored by International Paper, SCE&G, WIS-TV and WCSC-TV with assistance from the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina.
