COLUMBIA, S.C. - The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has revised the size of the shellfish harvesting area in Beaufort County closed due to a sewer line break, the agency announced today.
"This revision of the closed area is the result of quick repairs and sampling efforts, as well as more information concerning the size of the initial spill," said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC's Shellfish Sanitation Section. "The emergency closure associated with the sewer spill in the headwaters of Battery Creek is now reduced to the area from the Battery Creek Bridge back to the southeastern point of Deer Island."
