DHEC accepting nominations for Spare the Air Awards

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control is accepting nominations for the Spare the Air Awards, the agency announced today.

"The Spare the Air Awards program affords us the opportunity to acknowledge the innovators, environmental stewards and trailblazers throughout our state," said Myra Reece, chief of DHEC's Bureau of Air Quality. "As we partner together, all of our actions, no matter how big or small, help to improve the environment."

Reece said all businesses, schools, local government agencies, organizations and individuals that have successfully implemented a positive environmental change are encouraged to apply.

"The most recent award recipients include Midlands Biofuels for collecting and using cooking oil for biofuel," Reece said, "the Upstate Air Quality Advisory Committee for several air quality initiatives to keep skies clear and beautiful, and the S.C. State Ports Authority for successful emissions reductions."

Reece said this year's awards will recognize partners in the following categories:

  • Outstanding business/industry
  • Outstanding employee(s)
  • Outstanding local government
  • Outstanding school or district
  • Outstanding college or university
  • Outstanding community improvement campaign.

The nomination deadline for the Spare the Air Awards has been extended to April 20, 2015.
