Child Passenger Safety Week kicks off Sept. 18

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Child Passenger Safety Week began Sept. 18 and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is reminding citizens of the importance of installing child car seats correctly.

"Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for children over one year of age," said Owens Goff, Jr., Director, Division of Injury and Violence Prevention. "When properly installed, child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Seat belt usage increases the chances for surviving a crash by nearly 45 percent."

This week, DHEC staff are teaming up with partners from around the state to provide car seat checks free of charge. A list of events is below. At each of these locations, DHEC and/or local partners will provide demonstrations and instructions on the proper installation of the various child safety seats, including infant, convertible, and booster seats.

"At each of these events, staff trained and certified in child passenger safety seat inspections will assist people with ensuring their seats are installed correctly," said Goff. "Our goal is to ensure everyone who attends will drive away with peace of mind that their children are safe."

The Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Program began in 1995. It's funded by a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) grant administered by the S.C. Department of Public Safety (DPS). The goal of the program is to prevent and reduce injuries, disabilities and death to children due to motor vehicle crashes. The program provides CPS technician training and certification, technical assistance/education and child safety seat inspections. Child passenger safety tips can be found on DHEC's web site at http://www.scdhec.gov/Health/ChildTeenHealth/EarlyChildhood/ChildPassengerSafety/
