DHEC takes its role of protecting public health and the environment very seriously. On March 21, 2013, DHEC held a public meeting to discuss the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) and present Alternative 4 – Removal of the TLM and Impacted Sediments, as the preferred remedy for cleanup of the Congaree River sediments. Public comments on all of the cleanup alternatives were accepted through April 22, 2013. All of the comments received during the public comment period were in favor of Alternative 4.
On February 13, 2017, DHEC held a meeting and presented information on the status of the Congaree River project and the evaluation of an alternate removal approach. At this meeting, DHEC staff listened to concerns, answered questions, and committed to additional meetings and opportunities for public engagement prior to the selection of a final cleanup action.
