ESOP evaluates drinking water quality to ensure that radiological constituents have not affected community drinking water systems adjacent to and downstream of SRS.
We collect monthly drinking water composite samples from drinking water systems that use the lower portion of the Savannah River as a source (Drinking Water Quality Monitoring locations). Eighteen of these systems are groundwater-fed; four are surface water-fed systems. These systems serve approximately 285,000 customers. Of those, approximately 109,000 get their water from groundwater sources.
We also conduct semi-annual "grab sampling" from selected municipal and large community drinking water systems within a 30-mile radius of SRS. Our Columbia radiological laboratory analyzes the samples for gross alpha, non-volatile beta, and gamma-emitting radionuclides, along with tritium.
