Tuberculosis was
the leading killer of young adults, accounting for 29% of deaths in that age
group in 1920. Year in, year out,
tuberculosis was a deadly plague.
There were over 16,000 reported cases in 1920, and thousands more
unreported. There was no effective
treatment. Public health efforts were
very limited, emphasis was placed on basic sanitation, quarantine and public education.
