Some Beaufort County shellfish beds closed

COLUMBIA – The Broad Creek conditionally approved shellfish beds near Hilton Head Island in Beaufort County have been closed to harvest due to excessive rainfall, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.

“This closure is temporary and is the result of rainfall in excess of that allowed by the area’s management plan,” said Charles Newell, manager of DHEC’s Shellfish Sanitation Section. “The 24-hour rainfall total reported today for Broad Creek exceeded 1.4 inches.”
