King named ECOS president

COLUMBIA – Robert W. King Jr., deputy commissioner for Environmental Quality Control, has been elected president of the Environmental Council of the States, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.

“It is a special honor to be chosen by my peers to lead this nationally recognized organization,” King said. “I plan to continue enhancing the role of ECOS as an important voice for the states in the national debate over environmental issues.”

The Environmental Council of the States, formed in 1993, is the national non-profit, non-partisan association of state and territorial environmental commissioners. The organization’s mission includes providing information and an exchange of ideas, views and experiences among the states; fostering cooperation and coordination in environmental management; providing information and recommendations to the Congress, federal agencies and the public on environmental issues; and championing the role of the states in environmental management.

King, a native of Springfield, Ill., previously served as the organization's vice president. He was elected to the presidency at the ECOS annual meeting earlier this fall. He succeeds Stephanie Hallock, of Oregon, as president.

A DHEC employee for 34 years, King earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Illinois, a Master in Environmental Engineering from Clemson University, and is a registered professional engineer.
