Local church received state fitness award at USC game

MARION During halftime ceremonies at a recent USC football game, Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Churchs arthritis exercise program received the Governors Council on Physical Fitness Award, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

The purpose of this project was to bring a new exercise program to the community for the senior population and to raise awareness of the importance of being physically active with arthritis, fibromyalgia or lupus, said LaNell Williams, chronic disease coordinator for DHECs Region 4.

Williams said the program began nearly two years ago and has become a success within the church and throughout Marion County. Community partners include the Marion County Council on Aging, Clemson Extension Service and a number of other church and community groups that work together to support the exercise program.

We are a community-oriented church because we not only address the spiritual needs of people, but strive to meet the needs of the total person, said the Rev. A.C. Robinson, pastor of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. We are so honored and pleased to receive this recognition.

The programs 45-minute sessions are held at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All class instructors have completed instructor training classes and are certified in CPR and first aid. New exercise equipment recently arrived at the church and will provide an additional exercise option for participants.
