DHEC announces statewide worksite health promotion conference

COLUMBIA – More than 50 business professionals are expected at the 2007 Worksite Wellness Workshop on Nov. 28, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

“The theme is ‘Strategies for Success No Matter What the Budget,’” said Erika Kirby, director of DHEC’s Division of Obesity Prevention and Control. “The event will start at 9 a.m. at the South Carolina Hospital Association’s headquarters in Columbia.”

Kirby said the Eat Smart, Move More South Carolina Coalition is coordinating the event.

“The information provided at the workshop will help employers develop worksite health promotion programs which will improve the health and productivity of the South Carolina workforce,” Kirby said. “Studies have shown that these types of health improvement and risk reduction efforts lead to lower insurance costs for employers.”

According to Kirby, the conference will allow employers to learn about promising practices for implementing worksite wellness programs, particularly on a limited budget. The event will also feature an awards presentation for South Carolina’s outstanding worksite wellness programs.

The goal of DHEC’s Division of Obesity Prevention and Control is to prevent and control obesity by developing, coordinating, and implementing science-based nutrition and physical activity approaches in partnership with public and private leaders in obesity and chronic disease prevention. The mission of the S.C. Eat Smart, Move More Partnership is to coordinate collaborative and sustainable efforts to support healthy eating and active living where South Carolinians live, learn, work and play.
