Charleston County shellfish growing areas reopened
COLUMBIA – Some shellfish harvesting areas in Charleston County have been reopened to maricultured shellfish harvesting, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.
“The maricultured shellfish harvesting areas in 6B, 8, 9A, 10A and 11 have been reopened because water quality sampling indicates bacteria levels are safe for shellfish harvesting,” said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC’s Shellfish Sanitation Program. “Area 7 will remain closed until water sampling indicates that bacteria levels are safe to resume shellfish harvesting.” The areas were closed last week due to potential contamination by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Hanna.
