Spartanburg’s L.E. Gable Middle School named Champion of the Environment

COLUMBIA – L.E. Gable Middle School has received a $500 grant from Champions of the Environment, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

“The funds will buy supplies needed to make reusable tote bags, which will then be given away to community members,” said Lynne LaSalle, coordinator for Champions of the Environment. “Another great part of this project is the effort being put into educating people about the benefits of using the student-made ‘green bags.’”

According to LaSalle, the “Green Bucks – Students Making a Difference” project, is all about planning, education and teamwork. Students are working in teams to produce, promote and distribute reusable tote bags.

L.E. Gable Middle School will receive a $500 cash award to use toward its project. The school will also receive Champions give away items and a commercial about their project will be aired on WIS-TV in Columbia and WCSC-TV in Charleston.

For more than 15 years, Champions of the Environment has rewarded environmental awareness and action in South Carolina’s kindergarten through 12th grade students. Champions is sponsored by Eastman Chemical Company, International Paper, WCSC-TV, WIS-TV and DHEC. The Champions partnership awards ten grants over two grant cycles. Applications for Champions’ next round of grants are due Jan. 15, 2009.
