Certain Beaufort County shellfish harvesting areas closed

COLUMBIA – Shellfish harvesting areas in Broad Creek and Battery Creek in Beaufort County have been closed as a precaution due to excessive rainfall, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.

“The areas will remain closed until water quality sampling indicates bacteria levels are safe for shellfish harvesting,” said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC’s Shellfish Sanitation Program.

For information on shellfish beds in Horry and Georgetown counties, call DHEC’s Region 6 EQC office at (843) 238-4378. For information on shellfish beds in the Charleston area, call DHEC’s Region 7 EQC office at (843) 953-0160.
