Ruptured sewer line forces closure of Hilton Head Island shellfish harvesting area

COLUMBIA - The shellfish harvesting areas of Park Creek, including a 1000 foot semi circle extending from the mouth in both directions into Skull Creek and Port Royal Sound, have been closed as a precaution due to a ruptured sewer line, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.

“The areas will remain closed until water quality sampling indicates bacteria levels are safe for shellfish harvesting,” said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC’s Shellfish Sanitation Program.
