S.C School for the Blind named Champion of the Environment

COLUMBIA - The S.C. School for the Blind in Spartanburg has been awarded a $500 grant from Champions of the Environment, the state Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

“The school’s ‘Environmental Enhancements for Non-Visual Learners’ project will use gardening to initiate wonderful environmental experiences for all students at its main campus for students who are deaf, blind or multi-sensory disabled,” said Lynne LaSalle, coordinator for Champions of the Environment.

According to LaSalle, students will primarily select and plant plants that can be experienced using multiple senses. They will learn about water conservation principles through proper plant selection and placement, the use of soaker hoses and mulching.

The S.C. School for the Blind will receive a $500 cash award to use toward its project. The school will also receive Champions give away items, and a commercial about their project will be aired on WIS-TV in Columbia and WCSC-TV in Charleston.

For more than 15 years, Champions of the Environment has rewarded environmental awareness and action in South Carolina’s kindergarten through 12th grade students. The program is sponsored by Eastman Chemical Company, International Paper, WCSC-TV, WIS-TV and DHEC, with additional support from the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina. The Champions partnership awards 10 grants over two grant cycles. Applications for Champions’ next round of grants are due Sept. 15.
