Earth Day observance coming up

COLUMBIA – The 39th anniversary of Earth Day will be commemorated April 22, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.

“There’s a role for everyone in protecting South Carolina’s environment,” said DHEC Commissioner Earl Hunter. “From the smart use of water, steps to improve the quality of the air we breathe, to recycling, DHEC has a program that can help each of us make every day Earth Day.”

Hunter said environmental awareness is an everyday activity in which each South Carolinian shares a role. DHEC has many programs and opportunities for residents of all ages to become more involved.

“Earth Day is a great time to celebrate the environmental gains we’ve made over the decades while looking towards making even greater progress in the future,” Hunter said.

“Become educated, get involved and take action.”
