DHEC update on swine flu sampling
COLUMBIA, S.C. - A total of 13 confirmed cases of the Influenza A H1N1 (Swine) virus and nine probable cases has been identified in the state, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
“All of the confirmed cases are associated with the investigation involving a school in Newberry County,” said Jerry Gibson, M.D., chief of DHEC’s Bureau of Disease Control. “At this time, DHEC is conducting 22 investigations throughout the state.”
Dr. Gibson said those who have been identified as confirmed or probable cases have been instructed to stay home until they are well.
“We expect those who are sick to voluntarily isolate themselves for a short time and those who were exposed should voluntarily quarantine themselves at home.
“These steps are asked not only to help exposed and infected citizens, but also to protect others from exposure and illness, and to prevent further spread,” Dr. Gibson said. “Isolation and quarantine are used to protect your family, friends and others from the virus.”
Dr. Gibson said South Carolinians should wash their hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes with their sleeve (not a hand). If anyone has signs or symptoms of influenza, avoid crowds and if symptoms become severe, contact your health care provider.
- No media briefings are scheduled for the weekend.
- DHEC has activated the statewide 211 telephone system. Operators will provide calls with information about the virus and what they can do. If callers are unable to reach the 211 system, they can dial toll-free 1-877-648-9900.
- A state map is available on the Web site at http://www.scdhec.gov/flu/novel-h1n1-flu.htm showing counties with confirmed and probable cases. The map will be updated daily.
