DHEC names 2009-10 First Team All-Health Team student winners
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Art’s Walk One World Walking Club won the first-place gold award and $5,000 in the All-Health Team’s annual awards competition, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
“The top prize was awarded May 7 from eight monthly winners of student-coordinated preventive health projects,” said Joann Minder, DHEC’s All-Health Team program coordinator. “The winning project combines the study of geography and maps with physical activity. The students choose different places and calculate the number of miles it would take to walk to that destination. Then they track and log the mileage they walk.
“Ben Hoover of WIS-TV was the emcee for the event and University of South Carolina athletics mascot ‘Cocky’ congratulated and entertained the winners,” Minder said. “The Joseph Keels Elementary Cubs Awesome Step Team entertained the audience with creative foot action and showed that exercise can be fun. The Southern Grooveline line dancers also provided entertainment.”
Minder said the second-place silver award of $3,000 went to Angel Oak Elementary School of Johns Island in Charleston for its Healthy Cooking Club. Plantersville Elementary School in Georgetown County won the third-place bronze award and $2,000 for its “Stop the Silent Killer” (hypertension) project.
