Petrofes named Region 2 director

COLUMBIA - Matthew Petrofes has been named regional health director for DHEC’s Region 2 area, which provides public health services in Greenville, Pickens, Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union counties, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

Petrofes joined DHEC in 1990 as district administrator in the agency’s Aiken regional office. He has served as director of health administration for the agency’s Health Services deputy area and since 2001, has been the regional health director of DHEC’s Region 8 area, which serves Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton and Colleton counties. He succeeds David Goolsby who retired earlier this year.

“Matt is a proven leader in the field of public health,” said DHEC Commissioner Earl Hunter. “While I know he will be missed by his colleagues in Region 8, we are excited about the experience he brings to Region 2.”

Petrofes earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina’s Southeast Public Health Leadership Institute. While health director in Region 8, he was chair of the Beaufort County Alliance for Human Services and helped coordinate the Together for Beaufort Community Indicators Project.
