DHEC modifies Edisto Beach swimming advisory

COLUMBIA, S.C. – One swimming advisory has been lifted and another swimming advisory has been issued for a small section of Edisto Beach, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.

"The affected area of the current swimming advisory includes 200 feet above and below the beach access at Yacht Club Road," said David Payne of DHEC's Region 8 Environmental Quality Control office, which serves Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties. "High bacteria levels have been detected in this section of the beach, and swimming is not advised until bacteria levels return to normal."

According to Payne, it is safe to wade, collect shells and fish within the swimming advisory area.

"It's best if people don't put their head under water to guard against the possibility of swallowing the water," Payne said. "People with open cuts or other wounds should also avoid contact with the water."

Payne said the initial advisory coverage area included 200 feet to either side of Mikell Street.

"Our most recent test results from the Mikell Street sampling location indicate bacteria levels are within acceptable limits," he said.
