Burgess Elementary School project named to All-Health Team
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Healthy Food Choices program at Horry County's Burgess Elementary School has been named to the All-Health Team, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
"The Healthy Food Choice program was developed after several students noticed that many students were not eating healthy lunches and a great deal of food was being wasted," said Joann Minder, All-Health Team program coordinator. "The students developed healthy food choices and an exercise point system with an assigned daily goal. The program is a fun, creative and competitive way to encourage nutrition and physical activity."
Minder said, as a way to make food choices easier for students, a logo was designed and placed above food items in the cafeteria line to indicate the selections are healthy.
According to Minder, a representative from Georgetown Hospital System meets with the Healthy Food Choices program student leaders each month to advise and assist them with calculating points and adding food choices.
DHEC, WIS-TV, and BlueCross-BlueShield of South Carolina sponsor the All-Health Team. Each month, the partnership recognizes an individual or youth group promoting health in their community.
