DHEC reopens Beaufort County clam and oyster harvesting areas

COLUMBIA, S.C. – All clam and oyster harvesting areas near Parris Island that were closed earlier this month due to a sewer spill at the U.S. Marine Corp Recruit Depot have been reopened, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.

"These areas have been reopened because water quality and tissue sampling results indicate bacteria levels are suitable for clam and oyster harvesting," said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC's Shellfish Sanitation program.
