DHEC responding to Town of Lexington's wastewater treatment plant

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Due to a loss of power as severe thunderstorms passed through the area, the Town of Lexington's Coventry Woods Wastewater Treatment Plant is discharging partially treated wastewater into Twelve Mile Creek. There are also sanitary sewer overflows along the plant's collection system that could reach Twelve Mile Creek.

According to information DHEC has gathered, the plant lost power about 4:00 this morning. The power outage was discovered by an operator about two hours later. SCE&G is working to restore power to the plant.

DHEC anticipates higher levels of bacteria in Twelve Mile Creek and the Saluda River. Residents should avoid contact with waters around and downstream of the overflow. Pets should also be kept away from waters around and downstream of the overflow.
