Lake City's Main Street Elementary School named to All-Health Team

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The "Walk it Out MSE" walking club of Main Street Elementary School in Lake City has been named to the All-Health Team, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

"The club started as a results of teachers at Main Street Elementary noticing students acting lethargic, which can be a result of a lack of physical activity," said Joann Minder, All-Health Team program coordinator. "It promotes fitness through various activities such as walking, wall climbing, and hopscotch and step aerobics."

Minder said students use their free time to reach their goal of walking three laps a day. Students are also introduced to various sports such as basketball, volleyball and other physically active recess games throughout the year.

"The club sponsored a Fun Run in December to get parents and community members involved," Minder said. "This was a great opportunity for the community to use the walking track. More than 40 families took part in physical activities and games incorporating math, reading, spelling and nutrition."

DHEC, WIS-TV, and BlueCross-BlueShield of South Carolina sponsor the All-Health Team. Each month, the partnership recognizes an individual or youth group promoting health in their community. For more information, visit the All-Health Team website, call Minder at (803) 545-4501, or e-mail her at:
