Florence's McLaurin Elementary School named to All-Health Team
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The "Walking-Just Do It Club" at McLaurin Elementary School in Florence has been named to the All-Health Team, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
"The club was started in 2006 to address the lack of physical activity among the students," said Joann Minder, All-Health Team Coordinator. "Students walk laps in the gym or on the track daily. They use a destination map to set their goals and to calculate the number of miles needed to reach various locations."
Minder said the club reaches beyond the school and into the homes to promote walking.
"Newsletters and weekly tally sheets are sent home with students to encourage family members to walk and track their steps," she said. "The club also sponsors a community-walking event at the school each year. The school hopes that students will make walking a lifetime activity."
DHEC, WIS-TV, and BlueCross-BlueShield of South Carolina sponsor the All-Health Team. Each month, the partnership recognizes an individual or youth group promoting health in their community.
