DHEC names 2010-11 First Team All-Health Team student winners
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The "Food Choice" program at Myrtle Beach's Burgess Elementary School won the first-place gold award at the All-Health Team's annual awards ceremony, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
"The winning project was chosen from eight monthly winners of youth-coordinated preventive health projects," said Joann Minder, DHEC's All-Health Team program coordinator. "It was based on the study of fellow classmates' eating habits. A point system was developed to guide students in choosing healthy foods and exercising at home."
Minder said the second-place silver award went to Girl Scouts Troop 2303 in Columbia for its nutrition and exercise program. Okatie Elementary School won the third-place bronze award for its "Okie Healthy Steps" program.
DHEC, WIS-TV, and BlueCross-BlueShield of South Carolina sponsor the All-Health Team. Each month, the partnership recognizes an individual or youth group promoting health in their community.
