DHEC reorganizing Charleston-area vital records offices
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Vital records offices in Berkeley and Dorchester counties will be consolidated on Aug. 1 to a location in North Charleston, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
“We’ll be using available technology to decrease wait time, improve customer flow and overall customer satisfaction,” said Luanne Miles, director of DHEC’s Division of Vital Records. “This new approach will allow us to offer more services at the local level every weekday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.”
Miles said the new office, located at 4050 Bridge View Drive in North Charleston, will be able to fulfill requests for long form birth certificates. Those are currently available only from the state vital records office in Columbia.
“The reorganization underway in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties is the first step in the creation of 19 regional vital records centers across the state,” Miles said. “We’ve determined more than 90 percent of all South Carolinians will be within about a half hour’s driving distance of the planned 19 centers,”
