DHEC accepting ‘Champions of the Environment’ award applications

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control's Champions of the Environment program is accepting applications for its 2011-2012 season, the agency announced today.

“This competitive grant award program is a great opportunity for individual students and school groups working on well-planned, hands-on environmental projects to receive grant funding to protect and improve the water, air and land,” said Amanda Ley, coordinator of Champions of the Environment.

“Eligible projects must involve K-12 students in South Carolina and address an environmental issue in one or more of the following categories: prevention or reduction of pollution in the air, water or land; waste reduction; restoration, preservation or enhancement of natural areas; or water or energy efficiency,” Ley said. “Projects should also educate the community and make a lasting difference to the environment.”

Applications are due by Oct. 15. Award recipients will be notified in November. Winning projects will be featured in a TV commercial that will air in Charleston and Columbia, and listed on the Champions webpage.

For more information and to submit an online application, visit or call Ley at (803) 898-4183.

Champions of the Environment was established in 1993. It is sponsored by WCSC-TV, WIS-TV, International Paper and DHEC, with additional support provided by the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina.
