DHEC opens nominations for 'Spare the Air' Awards

COLUMBIA S.C. – The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control is accepting nominations for its “Spare the Air” Awards, the agency  announced today.

“The ‘Spare the Air’ awards program affords us the opportunity to acknowledge the innovators, environmental stewards and trailblazers throughout our state,” Reece said. “As we partner together, all of our actions, no matter how big or small, help to improve the environment.”

Reece said all businesses, schools, local government agencies, organizations and individuals that have successfully implemented a positive environmental change are encouraged to apply.

“The 2010 award recipients include Pickens County Government, Abitibi Bowater, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) and Dover Elementary School,” Reece said. “Their initiatives include establishing a county-wide biodiesel fuel program, developing an energy management system that significantly reduced energy usage, implementing an employee awareness initiative, carpooling and a district-wide anti-idling program.”

Reece said this year’s awards will recognize partners in the following categories:

  • Outstanding business/industry
  • Outstanding employee(s)
  • Outstanding local government
  • Outstanding school or district
  • Outstanding college or university
  • Outstanding community improvement campaign

Nominations will be accepted until the close of business on September 30.
