DHEC seeking nominations for CON program review committee

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control is seeking nominations for individuals willing to serve on a committee to review its Certificate of Need (CON) program, the agency announced today.

“The DHEC Board granted approval to form this committee at its September meeting,” said Pam Dukes, DHEC’s deputy commissioner of Health Regulation. “The committee will be charged with evaluating the CON statute, regulations and processes in order to determine recommendations relating to our CON program.”

Dukes said nominations are being sought statewide.

“Anyone who would like to be considered for the committee should contact us and provide supporting documentation,” Dukes said. “We’re not looking for resumes, but rather a brief statement describing the qualifications that would allow someone to provide significant input and perform competent evaluations.”

According to Dukes, DHEC’s aim is to have representation on the committee from a broad range of categories such as practicing CON attorneys, consultants, management from large and rural hospitals, elected officials, consumers, insurance providers, and those with business and academic interests.

“We expect to hold the first meeting in Columbia in late October or early November,” Dukes said. “The first meeting should last no longer than four hours and that’s when we’ll schedule future meetings. The duration for the committee is expected to be about six months.”

Nominations should be submitted by Sept. 28 to Melinda Bradshaw, Health Regulation Liaison, 2600 Bull Street, Columbia, S.C., 29201 or via email to bradshmw@dhec.sc.gov. Nominations can also be submitted via fax to (803) 545-4579.

DHEC’s CON program is designed to promote cost containment, prevent unnecessary duplication of health care facilities and services, guide the establishment of health facilities and services which best serve public needs, and ensure that high quality health services are provided.
