Hilton Head school named to All-Health Team

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Strength Summed Up Team at Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts has been named to the All-Health Team, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

“The Strength Summed Up Team is an extension of the school’s walking and gardening clubs,” said Joann Minder, the All-Health Team program manager. “The need for the club arose when it was determined students were not in the top percentile of strength and flexibility scores in state-mandated testing.”

Minder said the club meets before school every day to learn how to develop strength and flexibility. Student leaders have learned fitness routines to music and have performed demonstrations throughout the community.

“The project also has a nutrition aspect,” Minder said. “A group of local chefs meets with the club once month before school to teach nutrition, share healthy recipes and serve healthy foods.”

According to Minder, the club will provide community service by helping to clean up area beaches in the fall and spring.

As a result of being selected to the All-Health Team, All-Health Team partner BlueCross-BlueShield of South Carolina will award $500 to the Strength Summed Up Team for the purchase of additional exercise equipment.

DHEC, WIS-TV and BlueCross-BlueShield of South Carolina sponsor the All-Health Team.  Each month, the partnership recognizes an individual or youth group promoting health in their community.
