DHEC recognizes Barnwell County Career Center as Champion of the Environment
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Barnwell County Career Center in Blackville has been recognized as a Champion of the Environment for its “Green Living” project, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
“Students will learn how ‘green’ technology can make energy and agriculture more efficient and increase sustainability,” said Amanda Ley, DHEC’s coordinator for the Champions of the Environment program.
“Students in drafting, building construction, electricity, and agriculture programs will incorporate solar heat, wind energy, rainwater collection, and composting into their ‘Go Green’ demonstration facility,” said Ley. “Business education students will help demonstrate to the community and to local industries how they can use ‘green’ technology at home.”
As a Champion of the Environment, Barnwell County Career Center will be awarded a grant to implement the project. The school will also be featured on the Champions’ website and a commercial will be made about the project and aired on WIS-TV in Columbia and WCSC-TV in Charleston.
Champions of the Environment supports environmental action in South Carolina’s kindergarten through 12th grade students through its grant award program. Champions is sponsored by DHEC, International Paper, Sonoco Recycling, Inc., WCSC-TV and WIS-TV with assistance from the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina.
