DHEC’s All-Health Team application deadline extended

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The deadline for applications for the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control’s All-Health Team has been extended until March 15, the agency announced today.

“Nearly one in three high school students is overweight or obese,” said Joann Moton Minder, the All-Health Team program manager. “The All-Health Team is a creative way to reward young people who participate in planning and promote activities that encourage eating healthy and being active. Developing good health habits at an early age increases the likelihood of those habits being carried into adulthood.”

Minder said that the All-Health Team will begin awarding recipients this month from applications already submitted. The extended deadline is offered to allow interested parties more time to apply.

Up to 12 groups will be selected this year with each group receiving $500 towards improving their projects as well as a chance to be in a television commercial. Out of the 12 recipients, three teams will be selected for top prizes with awards of $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place and $1,000 for third place.

Past All-Health Team members include the Swamp Fresh Garden Club at Ashley River High School in Summerville, the Greenville Dolphins Swim Team in Columbia, Imagine That Improvisational Theatre Troupe in Spartanburg and the Kids Grow School Yard Classroom Garden at Hursey Elementary School in Charleston.

The All-Health Team was established in 2003 and is sponsored by Blue Cross-Blue Shield of South Carolina, WIS-TV and DHEC. For more information about becoming a part of the All-Health Team, visit http://www.sdhec.gov/allhealth or call 803-545-4501.
