DHEC Update – TB Investigation, Greenwood County

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has provided the following update to the tuberculosis (TB) investigation in Greenwood County:

  1. This investigation has been going on since March 8, inside and outside of the school, as it relates to the contacts of the Index.

Since its inception, many individuals with a relationship to the 2 (two) infectious patients (other than those in the school) have been tested - and found to carry the germ.  However, in the entire investigation - inside and outside of the school - there are still only two infectious people identified thus far in the community, and both are affiliated with the school.
  1. As of this update, the testing totals (associated with the school) stand as follows:

    Total number of TB skin tests = 603 (112 non-students, 491 students),
Total number of positive TB skin test results = 74 (19 non-students, 55 students),
    Total number of abnormal chest X-ray readings = 12 (2 non-students, 10 students).
  2. Since March 8, as part of DHEC’s ongoing investigation, the following information reflects additional testing and results obtained thus far:

Total number of TB skin tests = 501,
Total number of positive TB skin test results = 25,
Total number of abnormal chest x-ray readings = 1*.

*The one (1) abnormal chest x-ray was identified as an extrapulmonary case of TB, and had been medically determined to be non-infectious.

Information resulting from this investigation will be provided as it is confirmed, and in accordance with state and federal law.
