DHEC Update – TB Investigation, Greenwood County

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has provided the following update to the tuberculosis (TB) investigation in Greenwood County:

  1. As of this update, the testing totals (associated with the school) stand as follows:
    Total number of TB screening tests performed = 569 (112 non-students, 457 students),
    Total number of positive TB screening test results = 73 (20 non-students, 53 students),
    Total number of abnormal chest X-ray readings = 12 (2 non-students, 10 students).
  2. Since March 8, as part of DHEC’s ongoing investigation, the following information reflects additional testing and results obtained thus far:
    Total number of TB screening tests performed = 760,
    Total number of positive TB screening test results = 20 (5 duplicate records were found and deleted since the 6.13.13 reporting),
    Total number of abnormal chest x-ray readings = 1*.

*The one (1) abnormal chest x-ray was identified as an extrapulmonary case of TB, and had been medically determined to be non-infectious.

Information resulting from this investigation will be provided as it is confirmed, and in accordance with state and federal law.
