January 1, 2004 began a new era in Vital Records in
South
Carolina with the rollout of the live Web Birth Module of the Vital
Records and Statistics Integrated Information System. Today, all
of the birthing hospitals in the state can register live births
electronically using the system developed by the Genesis Corporation
in coordination with the DHEC Vital Records Re-engineering Team
in PHSIS. The system was developed with input from the hospitals,
county health departments and others.
With the support and the assistance of the District
Administrators,
county IRC's, the DCR's and other staff, the Web Birth System
is operational in all of the county vital records offices in the
state. County DCR's are now involved in the beginnings of their unique
new role in the electronic system.
Work continues on refining the system, solving
problems and developing
the Fee and Issuance Module and the Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS)
Module.
