Former Lobeco Products

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has developed this website to inform citizens of issues related to the former Lobeco Products site located at 23 John Meeks Way in Seabrook, SC. This website will:

  • Provide quick access to information about the site;
  • Provide a way for citizens to receive updates and sign-up to be on our mailing list for future meetings; and
  • Continue to grow as more information is added.

Site History

The Lobeco Products site operated as a specialty chemical manufacturer for more than 40 years, from 1966 to 2009. Other companies that have either owned or operated on this site include: Tenneco, American Color and Chemical (ACC), Venture Chemical, CFPI, NuFarm, Arrmaz, and Coastal Demolition. The product lines included dyes, farm chemicals, drilling fluid chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, and general specialty chemicals.

In 1986, it was discovered that previous activities on-site had led to groundwater contamination. Former owners and their consultants have started the process to clean-up the groundwater.

Based on the presence of containers of hazardous substances in poor condition and a request from DHEC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiated an emergency action in 2012. In September 2012, EPA completed a removal of these containers.
