South Carolina Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) Grants

Introduction

Reducing diesel emissions is an important air quality challenge as diesel emissions make up a significant portion of the on-road and non-road mobile source air pollution in South Carolina. Although more stringent emission standards are taking effect for new heavy-duty on-road and non-road engines, the diesel engines currently in use will last a long time and continue to emit large amounts of air pollution for years to come.

The EPA administers two components of the DERA grants: the National Clean Diesel Program and the State Clean Diesel Grant Program.

The National Clean Diesel Program contains the majority of the funding and has a variety of grant opportunities. This program contains the National Funding Assistance Program (this component is administered by EPA’s regional offices), Emerging Technologies Program, and the Smartway Finance Program. Those interested in these grants apply to the EPA directly.

The State Clean Diesel Grant Program funded through DERA has provided an opportunity to help reduce diesel emissions. The federal funding for the State Clean Diesel Grant Program funds projects that provide cost-effective diesel emission reduction strategies. This funding is intended for county, city, or other local government entities, private organizations, businesses, and universities. Grants are awarded to eligible applicants for implementation of diesel emission reduction projects across the state to achieve public health and air quality goals.
