Welcome! You Hold the Key, SC provides resources for you to learn about how you can reduce vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and mobile source emissions during your daily commute, as well as improving air quality in our state. As new resources become available, this website will be updated to share them with you.

Driving a car is likely a person's single most polluting daily activity. Driving less by carpooling, riding your bike, or taking the bus also alleviates traffic congestion, but may not always be easy depending where you live and what you do.

In South Carolina there are approximately 3.2 million registered motor vehicles. In 1965, 11.5 billion miles were traveled on state roads. Since then, the miles traveled on the South Carolina’s roads have nearly quadrupled to 45.6 billion. As the population continues to grow so do the challenges to reduce VMT and improve air quality.

Pollution from vehicles, or mobile sources, is called Mobile Source Pollution. It includes both on-road (such as cars, trucks, and buses) and off-road sources (such as ships, airplanes, agricultural, and construction equipment). Mobile sources are substantial contributors to air pollution and have negative impacts on human health and the environment.
