A park and ride lot is a place where commuters can leave their personal vehicles and transfer to mass transit, vanpool, or carpool for the rest of their trip. Some commuters may even be able to ride a bicycle or walk to a nearby park and ride. The commuter returns to the park and ride lot at the end of the workday to retrieve their vehicle.
Park and ride lots are generally located in the suburbs or on the outer edges of large cities. Sometimes, exclusive park and ride lots are built, owned and operated by transit agencies, local or state government agencies or through other partnerships. Individuals might be able to make casual park and ride arrangements with businesses or with an entity that has parking spaces available.
