Radiological Monitoring of Dairy Milk

Picture of a glass of milk

Dairy milk is collected quarterly from five dairies within a 50-mile radius of SRS and two background locations outside of the 50-mile radius. Samples are analyzed for tritium, selected gamma-emitting radionuclides, and strontium. Fresh milk is collected in two containers from each dairy. One container is analyzed for tritium and the other is analyzed for gamma-emitting radionuclides. A sample is composited from the two containers for strontium analysis. Goat milk is collected and analyzed similarly, depending on availability.
