EnergySolutions is proposing to build a new mixed (hazardous and radioactive) waste storage and treatment facility in Barnwell, South Carolina. If approved, the facility will consist of a single building where waste will be kept in containers and tanks prior to treatment. Treatment will consist of mixing solid and liquid wastes with appropriate chemical agents to make the waste non-hazardous. No waste disposal will occur at the facility.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has written a Draft Hazardous Waste Permit and a Draft Radioactive Material License for this proposed facility. Comments will be accepted on the permit applications, draft permit and draft license from April 5, 2010 through May 19, 2010.
DHEC has developed this Web site to provide citizens quick access to the documents that are open for public comment and other information about the proposed facility that may be of interest.
If you have questions or would like to talk with us directly about the proposed facility, please contact Richard Haynes at (803) 896-4070, or by e-mail at haynesra@dhec.sc.gov.
