General Sanitation and Public Health in South Carolina

Environmental factors can affect public health in so many ways. DHEC's General Sanitation staff helps protect public health in South Carolina by regulating and monitoring sanitation and safety in a variety of environmental settings and situations.

Among our other duties, we monitor and help control the spread of rabies, track mosquito-borne diseases and advise citizens, local governments and organizations how to control the mosquito population, and enforce sanitation standards for mobile home parks, schools, and campgrounds and residential camps.

We also investigate complaints involving the kinds of nuisances that can endanger public health.

In addition, we work to educate citizens and businesses on important sanitation and environmental health topics, serve as consultants to healthcare professionals, and work with federal and local governments in responding to disasters.
