Environmental Surveillance Oversight Program (ESOP)

S.C. DHEC's Environmental Surveillance and Oversight Program (ESOP) offers citizens an independent source of information on the effectiveness of federal Department of Energy (DOE) monitoring programs. ESOP routinely monitors the environment on and around the Savannah River Site (SRS). This information provides a better understanding of the movement of contaminants and their effects. ESOP collects samples of air, soil, sediment, vegetation, fish, water, milk, and game animals to determine the amount of radionuclides and chemicals present. The program then analyzes the data to verify whether or not there has been an impact to the environment and public health.
