The S.C. Smart Gardener Program is designed to help you learn the basics of going green in your backyard. The program covers a variety of topics including healthy soil, composting, natural lawn care and smart watering as well as limiting or eliminating your use of pesticides. Any of these recommendations, if turned into practices by you at home, will help conserve resources, protect South Carolina’s environment and maybe even save you money. The smallest individual actions can have lasting environmental benefits. The "S.C. Smart Gardener Handbook" -- the centerpiece publication of the program -- provides the information, tips and guidance for you to take those actions to go green at home. The handbook is provided below by section and as the complete, original document. Printed copies also are available upon request in limited quantities. In addition to this handbook, the S.C. Smart Gardener Program also includes workshops and technical assistance as well as other printed materials. For more information on the S.C. Smart Gardener Program, call 1-800-768-7348. |

Composting is a technique that is used to accelerate the natural decaying process. A compost pile is a collection of organic materials (materials made from plants and animals) such as leaves, yard trimmings and food scraps that will decompose over time to create compost. |
