Estuary Management
South Carolina Estuarine Shorelines Mapping Workshop
May 19, 2011
The purpose of the South Carolina Estuarine Shorelines Mapping Workshop was three-fold. First, SC DHEC-OCRM wanted to bring together researchers and planners from other southeastern states to learn more about ongoing estuarine shoreline mapping and monitoring projects. Guest speakers from Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia presented overviews of estuarine shoreline mapping in their states, and they discussed methodologies, results, lessons learned, and next steps. These presentations set the stage for the second goal of the workshop, which was to provide a forum for the SC DNR Geological Survey to present preliminary results of their estuarine shoreline mapping pilot project in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The third goal of the workshop was to gain input and feedback from local and regional planners, state and federal agencies, scientists, and stakeholders about how SC DHEC-OCRM should use estuarine shoreline information in the future. This goal was accomplished through breakout discussions that focused on 1) technical aspects of estuarine shoreline mapping and monitoring; and 2) using results for better planning and policy development.
